Rogue Colour Palette
This is the colour palette I have chosen for my rogue character. It uses the dark teal and bright red from my moodboard, but I also included some gold in there because of the Rogue's love of it.
Trello Boards
I have made a Trello Board highlighting the different steps I need to take to achieve each step of my project. This will help me keep organised, and is also an industry standard process to keep on track with projects.
Priest Colour Palettes
Using the colour palette from my moodboard, this is the design of the clothes for the Priest. The gold highlights will shine in the light, whereas the rest of the cloth will be more matte. Also, the Priest will be furrier than they look on these drawings.
Priest Outfit Design Continued
In this post, I have the robe thumbnails and the exploration of values in the Priest's design.
For the robe, I wanted it to look stylish and fancy, but also a little bit humble so my character still looked approachable. Also, it needs Priest-like elements to it. I decided on the sun robe because the light beams have holy connotations, and it appears positive and warm.
For the values, I wanted to explore what fur patterns my Priest could have, as well as play with the gradients in the cloth.
Priest Outfit Finalised
The Priest's final outfit design incorporates a little bit of each thumbnail I did. I wanted the Priest to look holy and intelligent, but still friendly and cosy.
Priest Thumbnails
Beginning the Priest, I started with thumbnails. Using the Rogue's proportions, I'll be keeping my style consistent. At first I kept the Priest very similar in proportion to the Rogue, but I realised they stopped looking like a rat, and they needed to be fatter, so I made the thumbnails larger.
In my sketches I wanted to make the Priest look vaguely "religious" and holy. Therefore I looked at common motifs in religious clothing and put them in my designs.
Rat Studies
Some rat studies to get a quick grasp of the facial anatomy from different angles. Also thinking about how a rat can portray different emotions.
Rogue Expressions Continued
I did some more rogue expressions, but based on actual photos of cats to try and see ho realistic anatomy would look in this style. I think I still want to stay stylised, but it's important to still understand real-life anatomy for that.
Rogue Range of Emotions
I also did a range of emotions to give an insight into the personality of the rogue.
From top left to top right: Neutral, happy, furious, sad, in front of something they like
From bottom left to bottom right: Weeping, bashful, irritated, surprised, in front of something they don't like.
Rogue Outfit Finalised
Here is the final outfit design for the rogue, along with variations of hood and cloaks, as well as what it would look like from the back. I've also included a diagram to show what materials the outfit will be made out of, which will assist me when painting promotional art of the character.
Rogue Outfit Skecthes
Here are some outfit designs I've started based off of the anatomy I drew in the previous post. I wanted to make my rogue look a little bit tattered and rustic, but not weak looking. Also, I added sheaths on the belt to place some dual-knives. Additionally, to give it more of a "pick-pocket" vibe, I added thick gloves.
Rogue Thumbnails
Started thumbnailing the rogue character. I started by exploring what proportions I wanted the characters to roughly be, starting from very compact and cutesy to very tall and human-like. I went with the human-like thumbnail because I believe it will give me more freedom when designing outfits for the characters.
Drawing the face and body, the personality of the rogue started to form. I though tI would give them a cheeky smile, but the crooked whisker and notched ear also make them look a bit rough around the edges, and the earring represents their love for the shiny stuff.
Warrior Moodboard
The warrior moodboard is very much influenced by the warriors from World of Warcraft, and the rams from Zootopia. Rather than the heavy metal armour on some warriors, I think the more tribal look would suit my character better, including furs and leathers and bone rather than metal.
The rams from Zootopia are a big influence, because it was interesting to see a herbivore have such an aggressive role. Also, their huge horns are very intimidating and beautiful. I thought their weapon could be made out of natural materials as well, such as bone or stone. Lastly, I also looked at Zootopia for reference on how their hands would look, and how they would grip objects.
Mage Moodboard
The mages' have very distinctive iconography associated with them: they can look like witches, often wear long robes, and their outfits/spells often include various sigils or symbols. Their colour scheme is rich with blues, purple, and pinks; magical colours.
Crows fit with the mage class in many ways. Their colour scheme, dark with iridescent blues, fit with the colour palette mentioned. They are also very intelligent animals, and are one of the few animals that know how to solve complex puzzles and how to use tools. I thought this intelligence could be interpreted as magic.
The interesting task of translating the wings into appendages that can actually hold objects will be difficult, that's why I included the picture on the top row near the middle. It shows a drawing of an anthropomorphic crow and owl, both animals I will be using, that shows them having wings, but also fingers and thumbs to hold objects. This is the style of anatomy I want my avian characters to have.
Rogue Moodboard
Originally, I wanted the rogue character to be a Caracal, a medium sized cat from Africa, East Asia, and India. However after some consideration of the other animals in this project, I thought that they should all be connected in some way, even if it be in geographical location. Since all the other animals I considered were more like British Wildlife, I considered that the Caracal may stand out too much, so I decided to go with a common house cat. I chose the Siamese breed because of their colour palette, and because they are considered one of the most intelligent and talkative breed of cats, and I thought that would match the role of rogue well.
Priest Moodbaord
Here is my moodboard I have made for one of the classes I intend to design: the Priest. Inspired by World of Warcraft's priests, they have a pale colour scheme with a focus on yellows and blues, and connotations of sunlight and purity.
Additionally, the choice of animal to represent this class was influenced by animal that are very empathetic in nature. Animals I researched and considered were elephants, cows, and rats, due to their strong familial bonds and their ability to empathise. I decided to choose rats because I think they are really cute and interesting to draw, and also because I wanted to subvert some of the negative opinions surrounding them, and highlight their positive attributes.
